I'm sure you've all heard about Nadya Suleman, the woman in Californa who recently gave birth to octuplets.

She already had six children, and no job. Her mother told her that once she comes home from the hospital, Grandma won't be around to help any more.

Now, she's set up a website so people can send her donations.

That's right folks. She had six kids she couldn't afford to feed already when she made the decision to go to a fertility clinic and have a few more. Now, she wants the rest of us to foot the bill.

Sounds to me like this woman is running a scam, and she's using her children to do it. To me, that is absolutely despicable.

Granted, she may need mental help. There have been reports of her being obsessed with Angelina Jolie to the point where she had plastic surgery to make herself look like the actress. She claims that all she ever wanted was lots of children, and she certainly has them now.

Personally, I think those kids should be put up for adoption. It's irresponsible to intentionally have that many children when you know you can't afford the ones you already have. There are plenty of people who are completely unable to have children of their own who would love to care for those babies.

This is an extreme case, of course. I'm not saying that poor people shouldn't be allowed to have kids, but when you already have several children, no job, and very little support, I really don't think you should be allowed to intentionally force yourself to have more.

Nadya Suleman should be made to take responsibility for her actions. She didn't get pregnant by accident for ANY of her fourteen children. They were all a choice she made, and now she needs to figure out how to deal with it. No one else was involved in that decision, and therefore should not be asked to pay for it.

She is one of the (granted an extreme one) reasons why I am rather embittered by many of the social services programs out there...

Exactly. Social services needs to deal with this on a case by case basis. You can't just "make a law" and stick to it since the situations are always so different.

In this case, I completely agree with Leslie. We absolutely must have social service programs to help those who legitimately need it. But this is not one of those cases. This woman is a living in her own little world, and probably doesn't even understand why she shouldn't expect people to give her money. She should be probably be declared Non Compus Mentus and have ALL of her children removed.

You mean like people who lose their job in june(ish) and continue to milk the system?

I personally always hated people who came in with their welfare benefits cards and asked if they could use that as ID to get a cell phone...

I agree wholeheartedly. It's too easy to abuse the system. And this woman is one very dispicable example. Furthermore, she didn't just have another baby... she had a frakking LITTER. And she couldn't afford one more, never mind eight.

I just feel horrible for those poor kids. They don't stand a chance, with a mother like that.

And you have basically summed up why Clinton reformed the Welfare system and why anyone who's read page 600 of the new stimulus bill is having a fit.

Completely overhauled it and reformed it. Basically cut out open ended commitments so you couldn't just live off it anymore and included work provisions (you had to be working or looking for work). The stimulus bill includes language to put those back in.

This isn't a stimulus bill. It's $789 billion worth of crap.

Is there any way to induce post-pardom depression?

That household is as unstable as any drug addicts. They should yoink them.

And whatever happened to the hypocratic oath? This counts as doing harm. The babies are patients too. What kind of asshold agrees to use fertility treatments on a woman with six children? There aren't enough people struggling to have one?

hypocratic oath

I'd normally correct with "It's Hippocratic Oath, silly!" -- but in this case, the typo seems oddly appropriate. :)

I totally agree with you. Social services will be called at some point, if they haven't been already.

The doctor who gave her the fertility treatment should be seriously questioned.
