Why the HELL would a grocery store not carry any alcohol??

I went to the A&P in Old Tappan on my lunch break, primarily to pick up beer for the chili I'm making tonight. I grabbed the two other little things I needed, and then I walked all over the store, looking for the freaking beer. Finally, I asked the woman at the information desk where it was. "Oh, we don't carry any alcohol." Of course, she's looking at me like I'm crazy already, because I don't look old enough to buy beer.

What the HELL?

Also in NJ grocery stores can't sell alcohol. Next to the Starbucks is a liquor store.

Not quite. Some supermarkets have liquor stores, but they're seperate stores. You can't purchase them at the same time. I know some Shop Rites that have Shop Rite liquor stores attached, but they are two seperate stores. You can't pay for the liquor on the same line that you pay for the rest of the groceries.

Yeah, it's strange... NJ with no booze in grocery stores... NY with beer and wine coolers, but nothing stronger, and having to have beer and wine sold in different stores... when I was in Nebraska, you could buy ANY kind of booze at your local WalMart

dood... you could get the big 1.75L bottles of cheeeeeeap vodka (you know, the ones you've never heard of that come in plastic sketchy-looking bottles) at wally world out there... of course then there's Texas with their drive-through liquor store...

There's a couple of drive-thru liquor stores in Jersey. They come in handy when buying bulk for parties.

See i'm fine with some of the weird liquor laws, but the wine and beer having to be sold in different locations never made sense to me. like I can understand why grocery stores in NY will only sell beer and wine coolers, since its just a step up from Jersey's no alcohol in grocery stores. But when I stopped off at a liquor store in Tuxedo, and couldn't get a bottle of wine, cause the place only sold beer, was really confusing.

Yeah...Kingston used to have a liquor store with an ATTACHED beer distributor... owned by the same person... it's annoying to have to buy them at separate places...

that's cause jersey charges extra for liquor licenses. and it would piss off the grocery stores.

I didn't read your post till I got back from A&p otherwise I would have gotten it. You could check to see if they are open in time for you to go back on your way home. its the easiest one to get to and to much out of the way.
