Elton John says he'd ban organized religion.

I tend to agree with his reasoning, but I'm not a famous eccentric. The reaction to this is going to be interesting to watch.

I think he's said so many stupid things since he's gotten way too famous that all this is gonna garner is a mention in entertainment tonight and maybe a call to boycot from some B-rate TV preacher.

I don't know. When it comes to religion, people tend to be a bit over sensitive.

People get oversensitive about a lot of things, but I think this is just nothing new from him. No one will come to his defense, because he doesn't need it, and a few people will use it to "preach to the choir" (maybe literally). Business as usual.

What most people forget is that the vast majority of established religions have a basis of fundamental survival, with a dash of mysticism thrown in. Just about everything in there was designed to help society survive and prosper.

Just for ease and relative familiarity, let's take a look at Judeo-Christian stuff...

Ten commandments:
-The first four are your mysticism and keep people from chasing ideas all over the place, it's a control mechanism really... the next 6 are more useful though...
-Honor your mother and father (control measure to keep the family unit intact and establish a hierarchy)
-Do not murder (duh, wonder why that would be there)
-Do not commit adultery (so people know who the kid's parents are, no DNA testing back then and helps curtail jealous spouses)
-Do not steal (self explanatory)
-Do not lie (ditto)
-Do not covet (more or less and addendum for the adultery... not only shouldn't you do it, but you shouldn't even THINK about doing it is the idea)

If you look at kosher and halal food, the basis is health. People get sick more often eating shellfish (not banned by Islam, btw) and pork than beef and regular fish. Scavenged meat ("dead meat" in the Quran) would have been sitting and rotting. If you read into it, the only proper way to prepare halal meat is to slit the animal's throat and bleed it out. Meat prepared this way does not decay as quickly. Islam goes further also banning (in more strict interpretations) the meat of any carnivore. Why? Probably from noting carnivores eating carrion, but also the dangers in taking down a carnivore. It is also haraam (forbidden) to eat fish that do not have scales (such as sharks). This is simply a survival tool.

As for old-school organized religion's views on homosexuality, the basic thought is that the only way (back then) to procreate and carry on society is within a male-female union, so homosexuality would be viewed as a hinderance to the basic goal of societal survival.

Finally, we get to the basics of the human tendency to fear and hate that which is different. Keep in mind that even being left-handed was a sign of being in league with the devil.

I also agree with picoland in concept if not in form. I do find him to be hypocritical for having lived that sham of a life. He spent all that time basically lying to his wife.
