Also, I'm not sure how keen I am on buying a brandy brand new house. I'd like a fixer, so I could pick all of my own appliances and everything.

350 around me will get you a 1 bedroom home. Jersey realty sucks. Like hard core.

New construction isn't bad, cause you can always upgrade appliances and what not. My sister's last 2 houses were new construction. And she couldn't be happier.

I guess it all depends on how much time and effort you're willing to put in to your house.

Me and Lenice bought our condo new construction, and we love it. But we're already discussing purchasing a small fixer home in a couple of years. that way we'll have our own property, and we can make any structural changes we'd want.

That's where they start. The agent plays interested parties against one another to drive the price up.

It took over six months to sell, and I believe they had to lower the asking price before they even got any offers.

Anyway, it's not like I'm planning on buying a house in Rockland, ever.

1) Oregon real estate is still pretty cheap. A real condo there shouldn't cost more than $125,000, so you must REALLY wanna live there.
2) I'll live there, but only if I get to be Sauruman. >:-)

It's a specialty thing, so they can get away with charging that much. I wouldn't pay that much for some hum-drum condo around here.

They're building condos near me, in HAVERSTRAW, that are expected to go for a MILLION. They START at 600. Ri-fuckin'-diculous, I tell you.

Well, Rockland is pretty pricey to begin with. Let me quess, right on the water?

The one I almost bought last year was $250K. I was a frickin' idiot. At least the market is starting to soften. Maybe in a year or two we might get out monies worth.

It is right on the water, but it's also right next to the Tilcon plant.

What kinda plant is the Tilcon? I'm not familiar with the area.

Prices in Orange are down about 5%, I don't know about Rockland. Where are you thinking of looking?

We want to look in NOT Rockland, but not right now. In the next couple of years or so, I think.

Yeesh. I'll bet they only show those condos then the wind is blowing out.

Rockland is probably gonna stay high for a while. But in another year or so (I hope) it'll be a better time to buy. I'm thinking west Jersey or east PA.

Maybe Putnam county or something. We'll see.

Work is negotiable. I figure you should base where you live on where you want to be, not where you work. I could find a job pretty much anywhere.

You might want to look into Poundbury, if this is the sort of community you're looking into living at.

It's in Dorchester, UK, which means it's, well, about as far as Oregon. But cheaper.

Dude... Not only is this place awesome, but I could TOTALLY help design stuff for it.... I could even design an East Coast version, or get all collaborative with others to start our OWN lil' community :D
