More on the crazy teacher
Dec. 9th, 2008 08:42 am(See this post from yesterday if you haven't already, then continue reading.)
Since the news of the aforementioned incident broke, more information has come to light.
According to the other kids in the class, who are now writing to the news networks (links to be provided when I have time to find them), this happened on November 18th. The girl in question didn't go home crying to Mommy until last week. Apparently, the pair she was in were not the only kids in the class to be used for this demonstration, and they all volunteered.
It's pretty obvious that this family is just trying to look for an excuse to get money out of the school district, and that pisses me off more than a nutty teacher.
Don't get me wrong, I still think this woman is a nut bar with extra nuts. Binding the children with duct tape, even if it's only temporary, is out of line. If there had been some sort of emergency it may have taken too long to free them. Even though she has been doing this for about twelve or thirteen years, (mind you, I have no recollection of this lesson being taught when I was in her class,) I think that she should discontinue this method of instruction. Maybe she should be reprimanded, but I don't think she should lose her job.
EDIT: Quote from the comments section here:"Well me and my two friends , were in the classroom while this incident took place. We were learning about slavery in america in the 1600's and how the slaves lived on boats and were chained together. Mrs. Bernstein then did a demonstration that the whole 7th grade did while learning about this lesson. Mrs. Bernstein asked if anyone in the classroom wanted to participate in this, and the girl who had complained about this was one of them. The teacher then taped the girls hands and feet together to show what the slaves went through, and told them to crawl in between the desks that were taped to together. The teacher did NOT tell them to crawl under a desk or force them. After the demonstration took place, the girls smiled and laughed and they had enjoyed learning about the slaves history. The girl that took place in the activity was 100% not crying and was absolutely not offended by the demonstration. She was fine the next period and never said anything. It was only until she got home and told her mom about the demonstration that it became a problem. It seems to me that when the girl told her mom about this her mom probably thought that this would make a good law suit and then filed a complaint towards the school. As a matter of fact, the rest of the classes that did this activity had white students do the demonstration also. Its annoying that the news and people commenting have no idea what they are talking about and they were not there so they did not see exactly what happened."
