Sony's screwed. The PS3 can't play an undertermined number of Playstation and PS2 games. So much for backwards compatibility.

We pre-ordered our Wii from my buddy Lionel at Bad Moo. I am very excited!

Okay, that's hilarious. There are 4 girls at my office who are planning to camp out outside best buy in order to get some of those things to sell on eBay. They want me to put them up.

You should probably inform them that if they haven't pre-ordered, the probably won't get one. People were camping out outside of the stores JUST to pre-order the damn things!

While unfortunate, it makes sense that the PS3 isn't backwards compatible. Unlike the PS2 which was nothing more than an upgrade of the PS1, it is an entirely new architecture. It uses ble-ray DVDs, it runs Linux instead of a modified Windows variant, and the processor is an entirely new creation. They're already taking a monetary hit by putting a $2000 blue-ray into a $600 system, programming backwards compatability would be suicidal. I predict that within the next year, if they sell enough units, there will either be an upgrade, or new disks with multiple games on each being sold by vendors.

The problem is that, as far as I know at least, the PS3 was *supposed* to be fully backwards compatible. I'm sure that I was not the only one under that impression, and people are going to be PISSED OFF when they find out.

Whereas with the Wii, it's backwards compatible to the GameCube, and they'll be offering downloads of other classic Nintendo games from other systems.

console suck it in general...my "console" has a 64 bit processor, and phenominal graphics...and i made it myself. pc all the way. better games, and an infinite choice of controllers. also, cheaper to keep up with than buying a new console every 2 years.

Intel made all of it's processors(much more difficult since it was a ompletely new field) through the 80s and 90s backwards compatible. In fact, that is why Intel exists today.

This is true, but the cell processor that is in the PS3 is a completely new technology. Having backwards compatability would be akin to trying to install and old version of OSX on an intel based PC. They had to create a new version of the OS to run on the Intel chips. If there is any backwards compatability for older software packages, that is because Apple spent considerable time and money building that functionality into the OS. And remember, Apple isn't selling a $2000+ system for only $600. They're turning a profit right from the beginning. Like I said above, it's very likely that when Sony sells enough units and the production costs go down, they'll make a patch to allow for it.

Disclaimer- I'm not trying to condone any of Sony's other shady business practices here. I'm just a geek with some insight as to why they made that call.
