I went on a rampage at a book store one day and bought like six books that used to be on the banned books list like To Kill a Mockingbird (one of my fav books) The Giver and Black Like Me. Personally I think its amazing how ignorant some people can be. What books are you talking about?
Word. It's always (well, usually) been about the children, but anyone who's really thinking of the children should allow, no, encourage them, to read anything they can.
At the risk of being overly cynical, we have created a society which needs more bodies to sustain itself than it does minds.
I would prefer that as many children be as intellectually encouraged as is possible, but if the majority of parents and children would prefer otherwise (there is a limit to how effective encouragement can be), then it might be better to stick to nurturing, and eventually simply staying out of the way of, the ones that choose to improve, imagine, and think regardless of the school environment. Not everybody can or even wants to be an Alpha.
There's certainly enough for the rest of humanity to do. It's a staggering waste of potential, to be sure, but that would seem to be coming regardless.

Re: "O brave new world, that has such people in't!"
Harry Potter is fiction. Thats silly. If folks don't want their kids to read a book, then they shouldn't let their kids read a book. Folks will let their kids watch any bloody thing on tv but get in an uproar over a book(s). *sigh* Craziness.

The Olsen Twin Books.
Babysitter's Club.
Books that probably have killed the braincells of 70% of the current adult population.

Children are not being encouraged to improve their minds, to imagine, to THINK. It scares me.
